Sneak Peek of Lawson Bates' New Album

On Monday, we posted a digital exclusive featuring a segment of the hymn "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus," performed by Lawson Bates and Emily Ann Roberts. This morning, we have another video of the dynamic duo to share. (UP sure does know how to keep viewers happy with all these videos!) This time, Lawson and Emily Ann are singing a Lawson Bates Original.

Bates Get Their Greens

Meant to share this video with you early this morning, but time got away from us...

This week on Bringing Up Bates, Gil and Kelly Bates take the kids to Austin's Steak and Homestyle Buffet for an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. Everyone enjoys the experience, but the only problem is that Kelly is unable to look over each child's shoulder as they choose their food.

"When my mom says, 'Make sure everybody gets some greens'...the kids interpret that very loosely," says Nathan Bates.

"Three or four came back with all green gummy bears on their ice cream," adds Gil Bates.

Bringing Up Bates "Bates Dish It Out," airs Thursday at 9pm ET/8pm CT on UP.

Music and Food? Yes, Please!

Bringing Up Bates season four continues this Thursday with another all-new episode. The Bates have said that music and food are two of their favorites, and this week's show reflects that statement perfectly.

Watch as Lawson Bates continues work on his new album, with help from Emily Ann Roberts, a former contestant on The Voice. And accompany the Bates on an outing to an all-you-can-eat buffet, a dream come true for a family that has more than a dozen hungry mouths to feed. Do you enjoy buffets?

Check out the promo videos, and be sure to read today's Bates birthday post

Nathan Bates Turns 23

Wishing Nathan Bates a blessed 23rd birthday! The fifth oldest of Gil and Kelly Bates' 19 children, his full name is Kenneth Nathaniel Bates. He works in the family tree business, has a private pilot license, and is pursuing a commercial pilot license. Nathan and Lawson are also reserve deputy sheriff for the local sheriff department.

Random Bates Facts

Happy Sunday! For your enjoyment, we have a few random Bates facts to share with you this afternoon...
  • The Bates just started their homeschooling year, so their lives have suddenly become much busier. They primarily use A Beka Book, which, according to Kelly Bates, stays close to the public school schedule and produces high standardized test scores.
  • Trace Bates hopes to audition to be a trick rider at the Dixie Stampede very soon. How exciting is that?
  • Three-week-old Brooklyn Paine is doing very well, as are the rest of the Paines. Erin still teaches piano lessons out of her home, and Katie usually comes over to babysit Carson and Brooklyn. Erin and Chad are in the process of starting a furniture business, which they will call Cherin's.

Throwback: Bates sing "The Love of God"

We're a day late with our #ThrowbackThursday post, but better late than never, right? This week's #TBT is a video of the Bates family singing the hymn "The Love of God" back in 2011, when Gil and Kelly had "only" 18 children.

On a side note, the 2013 movie Indescribable tells the story of "The Love of God."

"The Love of God"
Frederick M. Lehman

The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain
O love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When years of time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men, who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Refrain

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

Refrain

Recap: 'Growing Paine'

Bringing Up Bates "Growing Paine"
  • Kelly, Lawson, and Carlin take Josie and Katie on a secluded road to practice driving. The two girls recently received their driver’s permits and are eager to get behind the wheel. When Gil expresses a little bit of concern, Josie replies: “Dad, I’m like the bomb driver. All they gotta tell me is the gas and brake and I’ve got it.”
  • Katie is more confident behind the wheel, but her passengers let out quite a few screams as she drifts into the wrong lane a few times. Josie is much more cautious and takes it slower. Katie and Josie agree that driving is more difficult than it looks. But then again, they are learning on a 15-passenger van...
  • Meanwhile, Erin and Chad prepare to host Carson’s first birthday party. Michaella arrives from Chicago to help. Chad’s mom, Tammy, and two of his siblings, Tabitha and Johnny, also come into town for the event.
  • Erin and Chad say they are enjoying parenthood: “It really blows my mind that time has gone by so quick, but it’s been so sweet and special," shares Chad. "It’s just a thrill.”
  • “These first birthdays are great,” says Gil. “But the problem is…they’re going to get really expensive.” He and Kelly joke that they might have to stop giving birthday presents to their married children so they can afford gifts for the grandbabies.
  • After lunch, guests enjoys watching various family members run around the yard wearing Bump N’ Bounce Body Bumpers. (The song playing in the background is "Tomorrow" by Dewey Lybecker, Daniel Read, and Chris Soother.)
  • Next is the three-legged and four-legged race. After the activities, everyone gathers around Carson’s highchair to watch him eat his cupcake. (See Tuesday's post for a hilarious deleted scene.)
  • “It was a fun birthday party,” shares Gil. “I don’t know that Carson’s going to remember it, but it will be one that we never forget.”

Body Bumpers + Bates = Chaos

Carson's Cake Smash Gone Wrong

"The reason Carson didn't eat his cupcake is Chad's fault because Chad don't like him to have sweets or anything that's bad for him, so...he likes yogurt, Greek yogurt, that Chad feeds him."

-Erin (Bates) Paine

When the Bates family gathers around Carson's high chair in the video below, they expect the one-year-old to happily smash his cupcake all over his face. Carson's reaction is priceless; he has no interest in eating the decadent treat, but cousin Bradley Bates sure does! Tune into this week's episode of Bringing Up Bates for more footage from Carson Paine's first birthday party.

Bates Gals in Florida

Seeking a bit of relaxation before school starts up again, a handful of the Bates sisters took a girls trip to Florida. Sister-in-law and mother of two Whitney Bates also joined in on the fun. Erin Paine, Michael Keilen, and Alyssa Webster were unable to make it.

Do you recognize the vacation spot? It's Cinnamon Beach in Palm Coast, Florida.

Driver's Ed with the Bates Family

It's time for Josie Bates and Katie Bates to learn how to drive! You would think that after teaching nine children to operate a motor vehicle Gil and Kelly Bates would be professional driver's ed instructors, but as you'll see in this week's episode, it's still a chaotic ordeal.

In the extended scene below, Josie and Katie join Kelly, Lawson, and Carlin in the 15-passenger van to learn the basics.

Josie Bates Disciplines

Gil and Kelly Bates' calm and intentional discipline tactics have rubbed off on their older children. While Mom and Dad are away on a trip in a recent episode, 16-year-old Josie Bates gently but firmly corrects five-year-old Judson Bates, who has refused to eat his lunch.

Josie: "Look at me. Are you having the right attitude? I at least want you to eat your bologna. You're not allowed to just eat yogurt. Understand me? Look at me."

And surprisingly, Judson sits down and eats. What do you think of the Bates' approach to discipline? Their kids are well behaved, so they must be doing something right.

Recap: "The 20th Bates"

Bringing Up Bates "The 20th Bates"...

  • Did you enter UP’s 20th Bates contest? After watching a bunch of entry videos, the Bates select 14-year-old Emma Wright from Texas. She and her mom travel to the Knoxville area to spend a day with the Bates family.
  • The first item on the agenda is Bible study. Then, it’s time for chores. Kelly lets Emma sample the two most hated chores, dishes and laundry, but the Bates mom lends a hand because she feels bad making Emma help. “My mom’s number one rule [is] new guests are ever allowed to work,” says Tori.
  • Later, the Bates let Emma choose a few activities. Emma asks Erin to give her a makeover. Carlin curls Emma’s hair while Erin does her makeup.
  • When do the Bates girls start wearing makeup? Kelly says around age 15 or 16. “Just remember, Emma,” Kelly cautions. “This is great and fun, but just remember: You’re beautiful without all this too. You’re beautiful like you were, too.”
  • When the girls finish their makeup party, they are surprised to find two horses in the living room! Nathan and Trace take Emma riding.
  • At the end of the day, everyone piles into the Bates’ 15-passenger van and heads over to Zach and Whitney’s house for a cookout.
  • “They’re so genuine,” says Emma. “The people that they are on TV, that’s how they act in real life.”
  • “TV makes us look better than we are, but you’re sweet,” says Carlin.

In the same press release, UP also announced that another hit original series, Growing Up McGhee, will return for a second season.

“Bringing Up Bates and Growing Up McGhee truly speak to our audience with the perfect blend of heart and humor. They are brand-defining series that deliver on UP’s promise to bring viewers great stories about families of all shapes and sizes. These lovable families have welcomed viewers into their homes each week, and we are excited to continue the journey with them and experience all of the love, laughter, excitement, and chaos in their ever-changing and highly entertaining lives.”

We love the network's description of Bringing Up Bates:

Led by devoted father Gil and his loving wife Kelly Jo, the Bates do everything in bulk while staying true to their values and rules for the family. But lately – as viewers will see – their simple rural lifestyle in Tennessee is in a flurry of transitions as this remarkable and ever-growing family continues to navigate life’s triumphs and challenges.

Finding a Venue

In a deleted scene from Thursday's episode of Bringing Up Bates, Gil Bates, Trace Bates, and Carlin Bates scout out a venue for the big graduation party. This is their last option, as all the locations they have looked into are booked up.

As the three Bates leave the venue, Gil takes a moment to tell Trace and Carlin what they mean to him.

Recap: "Bates Make the Grade"

Bringing Up Bates "Bates Make the Grade"

  • The day before Trace and Carlin Bates’ graduation party, Kelly comes down with a stomach bug and can’t do anything to help prepare. Carlin takes charge, with help from her dad and siblings.
  • Carlin made the invitation public, so this is shaping up to be the Bates’ biggest grad party yet. Although they asked people to RSVP via email, the Bates admit that they did not have a chance to count up the guests.
  • Erin, Lawson, Tori, and Carlin rehearse a song that they plan to perform at the party (“All Along” by Rebecca J. Peck and Mark Lanier).
  • The next day, Carlin directs setup under a pavilion at Mount Moriah Camp. Lots of friends and relatives, including Tori’s boyfriend, come to help. “The party was amazing, but only because Bobby was there,” jokes Tori.
  • Ashley also attends the party. “As a mom, I’m just glad that everybody feels comfortable around each other still, in spite of the fact that they have ended that part of their relationship together,” says Kelly. “I’m really encouraged that Ashley and Nathan both have been mature to handle this friendship,” adds Gil.
  • Brandon and Michael’s flight is delayed due to weather, but Brandon is able to convince the airline to put his wife on a different flight so she doesn’t miss the party.
  • All the guests arrive, and just before Gil kicks off the program, Carlin realizes that she has misplaced her notes. “Dad had no clue what was happening,” says Carlin. “Mom didn’t. Only I knew, and them papers.” She ends up finding them in the van…just in time!
  • The program starts with a handful of silly skits performed by the older Bates kids and their friends. Then, Nathan poses a few serious questions to Carlin and Trace. When asked who she aspires to be, Carlin’s answer is her father: “He’s always been faithful in the little things. He’s steady in the Lord. Whatever he does, he doesn’t lose his cool.”
  • “She was really dishing out some of the kindest words that I do not deserve, honestly, but that’s one of those moments you just wish you could freeze life,” shares Gil, tearing up.
  • What’s next for Trace and Carlin? Trace recently took over Lawson’s lawn care business, and he aspires to be a trick rider at the Dixie Stampede. His parents want him to go to college.
  • Carlin, who took dual enrollment classes during high school, is starting full-time college this fall. She will study online for the first two years so she can continue to travel.
  • Fans of the show come from all over to attend the Bates’ graduation party. “We definitely felt treasured,” says Carlin.

A Graduation Party to Remember

Trace Bates: "I like small parties."

Carlin Bates: "I figured, if I'm going to have a party...we might as well just invite the world 'cause that will make it exciting!"

Carlin and Trace may have different expectations for their graduation celebration, but their party ends up being an event that everyone will remember fondly (except for the moment when Carlin knees Trace in the face).

We just love this photo of Zach Bates with his daughter (seven-week-old Kaci Bates) and nieces (newborn Brooklyn Paine and 16-month-old Allie Webster). Do you think the next Bates grandbaby will be a boy or girl?

Date and Weight...

Now that Brooklyn Paine has arrived, let's see which of you correctly guessed her birth date and weight. For those wondering how Erin's labor went, the new mama calls it a "dream birth." She went into labor on Friday night and met little Brooklyn at 5:42am on Saturday.

When she gave birth to Carson, Erin's labor was very quick and painful, and she was unable to have an epidural. This time, things went much smoother, and she got her epidural.

Brooklyn was born on August 6th. Three readers correctly guessed her birth date, although only one (Amanda) included a name with the submission.

Born just over three weeks early, Brooklyn weighed in at 6lbs, 6oz. Although many readers came close, Lucy was the only one who guessed the exact weight.

Carlin the Party Planner

Gil Bates: "How many people are coming?"
Carlin Bates: "I don't know..."
Gil Bates: "You think 100 people?"
Carlin Bates: "Dad, 100 people is just us and the relatives."

Do you remember when we posted the invite to Trace and Carlin Bates' graduation party back in April? On tomorrow's all-new episode of Bringing Up Bates, "Bates Make the Grade," you'll see how it all turns out!

Unfortunately, Mama Bates falls ill at the last minute, leaving Carlin in charge. With help from her dad and siblings, will she be able to pull the party off without any major mishaps?

Brooklyn Paine...3 Days Old

Did you hear Erin and Chad Paine's exciting news? Their daughter, Brooklyn Elise Paine, arrived on Saturday morning, weighing 6lbs, 6oz. (Click here for more details.)

How did the Paines decide what to call their new addition? Brooklyn is just a name they both like, and Elise is Erin's middle name. The couple's first child, Charles "Carson" Stephen Paine IV, is named after Chad.

Do you think Brooklyn looks more like Mom or Dad in this picture?
