Bringing Up Bates "Plans, Bands and Mashed Potatoes"
- Erin gathers her siblings to discuss a surprise weekend getaway for Kelly's 50th birthday. "This is going to be a complete surprise, so the main thing is that nobody talks about it," Erin tells the little kids. Judson and Jeb claim they can keep a secret, but that remains to be seen.
- A few weeks ahead of Lawson's concert tour, he has the band over to rehearse. Some of the members don't know the songs, so the practice is a bit rough. "I'm sure that the pressure is setting in and that Lawson is starting to feel nervous," says Kelly.
- Later, Gil and the boys discuss building a "basketball goal" in the yard. They have been playing on gravel for more than 10 years and have been saving money to pour a slab of concrete.
- "When you learn how to play basketball on gravel, you have home court advantage over anyone that comes to your house because most people don't have that talent," says Nathan.
- Everyone has their own idea about where the court should go. "Lawson always has the perfect plan, no matter what anyone else says," says Erin. They decide to shoot for it. Whoever makes a basket makes the final call.
- "I know one thing for sure," says Kelly. "You boys definitely need a court. You need some practice. How about y'all take up a different sport."
- Kelly suggests the guys tear down the junk shed and use that concrete slab for their court. Gil says that will cost too much money. "That doesn't cost a dime, darlin,'" says Kelly. "One match."
- So Kelly decides to shoot a basket. "I've never even seen my mom throw a basketball, in her life," says Zach. And she makes it!
- "When I saw my wife make that shot...I'm kind of shaking in my boots," says Gil. It still might be a while before the actual project goes down though. The Bates do operate on Bates time, after all.
- Warden heads over to Erin's house, which is about 30 minutes away, for a cooking lesson. He makes chicken, mashed potatoes, rolls, salad, and cookies.
- "In a lot of households, the guys kind of do these things and the girls do these things, but in our house, it's not really that way," says Lawson. "It's all hands on deck." Zach jokes that he is the best at everything because he is the oldest.
Lily , Ellie when Kelly jo was going to throw the ball 🏀 I noticed warden had like something around his mouth like what you would wear if u were sick. What was it?
ReplyDeleteI think he was wearing it because of all the dust he was around so I think he just put it on because probably he is allergic to it ?
DeleteAs much as I enjoy this family, it irks me to hear the phrase "Bates time" (or Duggar time, or anybody who uses this phrase in their own life) because it makes being late into something that's quirky and just "different" instead of being rather rude. Obviously in the instance it was used in the recap, it doesn't really matter when they finish their basketball court because it's just for family use, but in general when it comes to other people's time, I think it's important to treat it courteously! I remember one episode with the Duggars where Anna and Josh were moving into their DC home and everyone else was coming over and Anna was getting really stressed out because she didn't know exactly when to expect them. She was clearly frustrated but it seemed like she felt she couldn't say anything about it because it was just "Duggar time" as in "this is just how we are". I know this was a random comment, but the recap just reminded me of how irritated I get when I see big families (or anyone else) use "______ time" as an excuse to be late
ReplyDeleteOthers have commented on the "Duggar time" issue. Yes, it is very rude and inconsiderate to leave others waiting on you. It really makes a statement that my time and agenda is more important than yours so you can wait on me. It's really a pride issue.
DeleteI couldn't agree more 10:01!! It is completely rude and disrespectful to others. The Scriptures say "love is not rude"... But like you said they have decided it's just "quirky" so it's not really a sin to them. My husband was ALWAYS late like that. I'm very punctual. So after a few years of fights and frustration whenever we needed to be somewhere I loaded up the kids and left without him. He's no longer on "his time". It's not funny or quirky to de-value another's persons time like that. If others would stop condoning their behavior and go ahead with scheduled events the Bates/Duggars woul eventually be on time.
DeleteI think you make a valid point however when people have lots of kids, sometimes no matter how hard you try, being exactly on time can be impossible. I'm not saying it excuses them from the standards of everyone else, just that make they have a track record of being late because of their circumstances, as opposed to using it as their excuse to always be late.
DeleteI agree. Even though they have 15 kids (at home) I think they could make it more of a priority to be on time.
DeleteHey, do you have any up-to-date pictures of Alyssa? She's only got two weeks left until her due date, and I would love to see how big she is. Thanks so much.
ReplyDeleteDo you all know where we can find tour dates for Lawson's tour that they have been featuring? I can't find them anywhere- even on his website!
ReplyDeleteHi Michelle,
DeleteLawson went on a short tour last fall (we advertised it on here) but if he plans any other appearances, we will be sure to announce it.
Have a wonderful day!
Lily and Ellie
No Lawson, it's mostly the girls on deck! And Kelly Jo seems like a pretty awesome mom!!!
ReplyDeleteYa, KELLY you are a GREAT MOTHER, and you have the most kindest EYES TOO!!!!!! REALLY!!!!!
DeleteWHY is it sooo difficult to watch your wonderful show, is it I live in Canada? I think Ups network, should make it easier, because there's thousands of bad things on the internet, there's only a few family friendly programs, and I really think they should let everyone see something more Up lifting LOL!!! I will not but my CC on site I don't trust, and I am scared to do so!! I have not even seen the 4th season, but you can see 3nd, why?!
