The Bates have more tidbits of knowledge to share in this new Southern speak video. Last time, they unpacked the phrase "Bless your heart," and today they're discussing whether "You guys" or "Y'all" is the "correct" way to address a group of people. Do you agree with their opinions?

I always say, "You guys." I live in New Jersey and pretty much everybody uses that term to address a group of people.
ReplyDeleteI use y'all--I live in Virginia. Basically I'm the only who says it! :):)
DeleteY'all is totally a southern thing, and I just love hearing it when we go south for vacation. Hearing y'all is just as important as seeing palm trees, lol!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe always say y'all here in Michigan. I think it was kind of a fad and we just got used to saying it.
DeleteSeems a bit trivial, either/or is acceptable. Would much rather hear them discuss what they are doing to make the world a better place, eg. where they serve, who they serve, how they serve, etc.
ReplyDeleteSaying y'all is a Southern term which doesn't bother me in the least. What I do dislike is the improper use of English such as "me and Dad". We were taught that you wouldn't say "me went to town" so you also shouldn't say "me and Dad went to town". First of all the proper phrase would reference the other person first, and you should use the word "I" instead of "me". So proper English would be "Dad and I went to town". I know I'll get hit by people who say this isn't important, but I personal feel lack of proper English makes one seem uneducated, which this family is not. I'd be curious about what the home school curriculum they use includes.
ReplyDeleteI know they at least partially use A Beka - which our family uses also - and A Beka is pretty specific about correct grammar.
DeleteMany people make this "me and Dad" mistake, home school or not.
DeleteI say both. I live in Kentucky but have Illinois background. I do find myself saying y'all a lot more than I use to. But I do still say you guys. :)
ReplyDeleteThose of us in the midwest say "you guys." This refers to both genders, and is much more "Northerner" than "y'all." I don't think I could ever say "y'all" naturally. 😊
ReplyDeleteI'm from Pensacola Fl and everybody I know down here says "y'all"
ReplyDeleteYou guys is California talk, as well.
ReplyDeleteI live in Illinois and I always say You guys.
ReplyDeleteI love the study of Southernese. My most recent favorite, "Wat-chu-no-Gud." Which means, "what do you know that's good." Used as, "what's happening?"
ReplyDeleteAnd down here, it's solidly "y'all".
ReplyDeleteI live in Illinois and I use both! I think "y'all" is just as common as "you guys", and I find myself saying them both a lot of the time.
