Is it "over yonder" or "over there"? The Bates are split on this one, but Gil Bates is adamant that his way is the correct "Southern" way. Check out the video below, and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

What were Erin and Kelly thinking ? Of course it's " OVER YONDER"
ReplyDeleteI agree with Erin and Kelly it's Over There.
DeleteI actually say "over yonder" and I'm originally from California.
ReplyDeleteOh and ladies you enjoy your weekend too. I enjoy these videos and I love to read your blog readers answers to the "Southern Speak" questions.
ReplyDeleteI am from NC (currently live in WV) & I say both. Over there is closer in distance than over yonder.

This is what I was thinking too. :) If it's over there it might still be in eye sight. But over yonder is far enough away that it might even be over the hill or around the bend where you can't see.
DeleteAnd I'm from NC too! *high five* ;)
Yon and yonder are words which mean a distance away. A word for "Southern Speak": People in the South, typically have ancestors that arrived in the South speaking English. That's not so in the North. Yet, people act like Southerners don't know how to speak English. An example: you all. You all or Y'all differentiates the plural you from the singular you. We're not ignorant people!
ReplyDeleteI can not watch the video
ReplyDeleteYonder is definately a southern word. You never hear it in the north,i'm from North Dakota, and its "over there" :)
ReplyDeleteI would say Over There. I'm from the midwest.
DeleteI've never heard anyone say over yonder.
ReplyDeleteHere in Northern Ireland we would use both. Although over yonder is more a country thing most people would know what you mean. Maybe the Bates should say its an Irish thing, lots of Irish settled in the southern states of the USA, heck we even gave you country music lol!
