Zach and Whitney's House

Last night on Bringing Up Bates, we watched Zach and Whitney purchase and renovate a ranch-style house. It was a big milestone for the couple, as they have been renting since their wedding in December 2013 and were eager to buy a home of their own. Below are a few before and after shots.

Wow love the before & After pictures. I live in my mom's house their kitchen is much bigger then ours. The kitchen in my mom's house is tiny as a box. Cool kitchen.

  3. It looks great though I admit I like the darker cabinets better. But the white cabinets actually makes the kitchen look way brighter which I love! Thank you for sharing.

  7. I sure would've left that big window in the kitchen. It's way too closed in without natural light. Their deal I guess but a kitchen is more charming with a window in it imo.

    1. It is much more modern without the window. They are young and this fits them well. They may also be planning on an addition behind that wall so eliminating the window now saves time and money for later additions.

    2. Why does everything have to be so "modern" nowadays, 2:57? That's an elusive term. Modern changes all the time. I prefer not to go with the fashions of the world because it changes constantly. I could never keep up changing things. I love "cozy", "charming", "character", etc. Personally, no window there would feel claustrophobic to me and dreadful for dishes. Even if it was an open space there looking into the next room would feel uplifting and open up the kitchen. And too you could look at something else, perhaps through a window in that room behind the kitchen, then stark white tiles right before your eyes.

    3. At the end of the day, it was Zach and Whitney's choice how they laid out their kitchen. They may have wanted a wall in that front room for decoration or furniture. There is plenty of natural light in the kitchen area.
In my opinion, a window over the sink would make the front room look like an addition. I would think that the window was unintentionally left over from a renovation and needed to be either turned into a pass through or a wall.
They worked really hard on the renovations and I think the house looks fantastic.

  11. Amazing, both the house and living in a rented place for that long. I only did it a year and will never rent again. Couldn't imagine doing it for 5.

  17. Zach and Whitney, you two did an awesome job with your new home! I love that sliding barn door, and the granite counters. Whitney, you were so right picking that floor. Wishing you many happy years in your wonderful home!

  18. Did they redo the kids rooms? I like to see how people decorate kids rooms. What theme they choose.

  21. I wouldn't have closed up the window but it does provide space for an extra cabinet.

  22. My kitchen looks just like their renovation. :)
I even have the exact same floors.

  23. Their renovation looks great, but why did they cover the window above the sink? Doing dishes and having no view is going to be a major bummer.

    1. I think because that window just looked into the livingroom, not outside

    2. 4:06-I've seen lots of houses with cutouts or a "window" in their kitchen into the next room. Makes it open and airy and you can talk to family members in the next room without screaming and you can still get in on a conversation going on in the next room (or feel like your still part of the picture without feeling isolated when you're working in the kitchen). We had one in my parents house from the kitchen into our dining room and we really enjoyed being able to listen to the conversation going on at the table as we worked in the kitchen!

  29. I wonder if they lost the kitchen window because they extended the room behind the kitchen. It would be fun to see the rest of the house. They have done a great job!

  31. They did a major renovation is two weeks in between jobs? I doubt that they did it all themselves.
Why are the 'after' pictures in black and white? The house looks nicely done. Did they do the whole house like the bathrooms and bedrooms also?

    1. The posts that I have read said the renovation took about two months not two weeks. They had a lot of help from family and friends. Also, their budget was $15,000 so it is unlikely they were able to do the whole house. Most people are only able to do renovations one part of our homes at a time. Zach and Whitney have done a wonderful job! I hope they enjoy their home for many years!

    2. The after pictures are in color. The just chose a neurtral color scheme. White, black, and gray are very popular now.
