Tori and Bobby Smith are just weeks away from meeting little Robert Ellis Smith IV, due November 24th. While she lived in Knoxville, Tori saw Dr. Vick, who has done obstetrics for multiple members of the Bates family, but fans have been wondering what she is going to do now that she lives in Nashville.
Tori is planning to have the baby at a birthing center that is located inside a hospital. The birth will be attended by a doctor, and she will have access to emergency care if needed.

Once again, only my opinion... I'm happy to hear that they are taking childbirth seriously. People forget that many woman and children have died in childbirth. Even in the best facilities, emergencies can occur. On another large family show on a different station years ago, they showed a birth in the family bathroom. The baby and mother were fine, but I thought they were playing with fire.

DeleteI know the birth you are talking about as Mum sat in bath giving birth - I thought exactly the same risking baby' life as if playing happy families - the baby was stuck in birth canal and most likely in distress. I think it was only by Gods grace hearing their prayers for urgent help did the birth end ok & baby not end up with cerebral palsy.
DeleteGiving birth at home is not playing with fire. If you look at other countries that do mainly home births they have WAY lower instances of mothers and babies dying during birth than we do in America with all of our hospital births. Hospitals are great for emergencies, but during typical births way too many interventions are used.

ReplyDeletePeople only want to know the answer to this because they want to compare the Bates to the Duggars. Again. Ugh. Whatever choice she has made will be the right one for her, the same as anyone else. Yes, birth is risky. Every birth has risk involved and nobody can predict what may happen but a mother to be has the right to make that choice without judgement. From anyone.
ReplyDeleteActually, I asked a question about Tori's birth plan earlier and it had nothing to do with comparing them to the Duggars. I was curious why she'd decided to stop seeing Dr. Vick even though they live only 3 hours away and I'm sure Kelly Jo would have been happy to have Tori return to the Big House for her "confinement".
DeleteAnd as so far the Bates have made different decisions regarding WHERE to give birth (Kelly Jo had home births for her first 14 kids, Alyssa goes to a birth center, Erin HAS to go to the hospital due to her medical issues) I was also curious as to what Tori would choose. I think her choice seems to balance comfort and safety, I'm also happy for her that she found a birth center in a hospital. That's not something all pregnant women have ready access to.
Being "only 3 hours away" from your OB or midwife is quite far. You generally have appointments every month for a while, then every 2 weeks, then every week. It makes complete sense that Tori would just get a new doctor in the place where she lives when it's someone she's going to need to see regularly - both in this pregnancy, and presumably in future pregnancies, plus regular GYN care.

ReplyDeleteJinger Vuolo chose (initially) a birth center next door to a hospital, before changing her mind and having a full-on hospital birth. Kendra Duggar also chose a hospital birth. So you’re generalizing.
DeleteHospital doesn’t always mean safer. There are many women who have died or whose babies have died in child birth at the fault of the hospital. My mother almost died when giving birth to my youngest sibling from a mistake made by the hospital and was not able to have more children.
Delete6:52- There will always be anecdotal evidence that supports one birth plan vs. another. You have to take medical research into account, not just the personal experiences of others. According to the Mayo Clinic website: "While most pregnant women who choose to have planned home births deliver without complications, research suggests that planned home births are associated with a higher risk of infant death, seizures and nervous system disorders than are planned hospital births."

ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to see Tori wants access to hospital care if necessary. Why do so many of these families not want a hospital birth? At least Alyssa went with a birth center with licensed/certified personnel, and Erin and Whitney went to hospital, which is obviously different from the other large family. I was happy Kendra did as well, which, to me, shows she and Joe wanted what they felt was best for her and the baby as opposed to following some routine the other siblings have chosen. Nothing wrong with home births IF and only if they are attended by real professionals and there is no know risk for problems.
