What's in a Ring?

Judson Bates and Jeb Bates

"I think if Kelton's going to propose to Josie, you need like three things to have. You need a place to go, you need the ring, and you need a girl."
-Judson Bates, age 7

How important is an engagement ring? The Bates all agree that it is very important. In this video, some of the guys and girls, including seven-year-old Judson, share their thoughts.

  1. Oh, an engagement ring is very important, but not more important than the giver of the ring!

  3. My husband let his dad pick out my ring. It was nothing like I would have liked .It was an ugly silver cluster. That should have been my first clue that he was not the right guy. The ring is where the guy really gets to show that he has you on his mind. The cost is not important. I later picked up a cheaper ring at Wal-Mart that was not my taste .

    1. This is an interesting post. Why in the world did he let his dad do the choosing? (Did Dad pay for it too?)

  4. I wish that we were able to hear from John, Brandon or Bobby on this topic also. I wonder if BUB has ever thought of sending a camera and asking questions that they can just add into these engagement moments.

  5. My engagement/wedding ring set was a whopping $65!!! I thought it was beautiful. My wedding dress was purchased off the rack for $165. I had cake and punch for my reception and I was totally unaware that many people were mocking me. 38 years later and still married, who cares?! My husband and I were popular kids (friends nicknamed us Barbie and Ken) but the world was not that into "stuff" I guess like they are today. At least we didn't have to just eat peanut butter and jelly! HA!

    1. The wedding is fun, but it's all about the marriage! Looks like you have your priorities straight :)

    2. My ring cost more than my wedding... but what special memories! My ring was $700. My wedding dress was lent to me by my good friend... fit me perfectly... no alterations needed! I felt very special wearing my friend's wedding dress! I did not want to leave anyone out of our wedding... so many hurt feelings when it comes to the guest list and who gets invited and who doesn't! So our guest list was open invitation! My mother in law provided the moose meat which was cooked in crock pots. My sister made lots of pies and fresh bread. Others brought salads. My friends have a gorgeous place on the lake so our wedding was outdoors there! We hired caterers to serve the food (I think they cost $250). Our wedding was very unique but was just what we wanted. Oh and we hired a friend to make our wedding cake ($75 I think). We will be married 17 years Oct 6th.

  6. My mother had given me my grandmother's engagement ring, so when it was my turn to get married, I had the diamond from it fashioned into a new setting. Thirty years later, whenever I look at it I think of her.

  7. Diamond solitaire engagement rings are a materialistic tradition and I'm honestly surprised these families embrace them with such excitement. Why is an engagement ring needed at all, when only one party in the engaged couple receives and wears one?

    1. Because it's an iconic American culture tradition. The Bates are very frugal and it is perfectly logical that Josie would get a beautiful ring BECAUSE they don't believe in divorce so this RING will literally last a LIFETIME. Plus engagement is fun and a happy time, why ruin it's excitement due to being tight and cheap.

  8. I wonder if the diamond was Kelton’s mother’s. If so, that’s very sweet.

  9. 2:58PM: I'm sure you're talking about all diamond engagement rings, not just "solitaires". Diamond engagement rings are not "needed", but it is a symbol of committment, just as a wedding ring is a symbol of love that never ends.

    1. But when divorce happens what happened to the “symbol” of love that never ends? It showed that a physical ring never kept the marriage together. It’s all in a matter of perspective I guess. I feel the ring is so mocked by so many couples that don’t keep their commitments anyway so what’s the use of putting all your money into a ring?

  10. Haha we didn’t do rings at all. Saved all that money big time. 18-1/2 years strong together now. We didn’t need rings to make our marriage, we needed each other and most of all, commitment to make it work. To each their own I guess. But I don’t understand this thing of putting a lot of money into just a ring.
