Chad's Flip House

A few days ago, we shared an update on the Paine family and mentioned that Chad's career in construction currently has him remodeling a flip house. Here is a photo that shows just how much flipping this home will require. He has stripped it down to the dirt! Some of the Bates boys, including Jackson and Trace, have been giving him a hand.

  1. He is a Jack of all trades. Good guy and hard worker. One of my favorites on the show but I really love this family

  2. Why do they all seem to 'flip houses'? How many homes can there be in one area to flip? Is this sustainable work for the next 30 years in this area?

    1. If I'm understanding correctly from the previous update, Chad is not flipping houses but is in construction. He is only working on the house.

    2. Who are you talking about? Chad flips houses but I don’t know anyone else in the Bates family that does. They live near Knoxville, Tennessee, so the fact that some of the Duggars in Arkansas flip houses doesn’t affect them. Knoxville is a very large city, so I am sure there are plenty of houses to flip.

    3. Is this his only stream of income? Chad is a gifted, hard working man, and I'm sure he is capable of making money in more than one way. Besides, he's the only one in this family who's into house flipping, isn't he?

    4. I think you underestimate how many people let houses go! “Flipping” them is definitely sustainable, probably in any town in America. :)

    5. They flip houses because there a low barrier to entry. It requires no education or licensing, yet promises the possibility of a good profit. Chad can't just start practicing medicine or law! Those things would take an education. Flipping houses anyone can do if they have the money.

    6. I think Chad saved his money and bought a run-down house, which he hopes to fix up and sell. They spoke about it on an episode. This seems like a very risky venture to me. It costs money to own a house, let alone the huge cost of material. Savvy realtors lose their shirts trying to "flip" homes, it's not as easy as it appears.

    7. "Letting a house go" does not mean it can be easily flipped. IT is a complex combination of location, current market conditions, purchasing the house at good price, and ability to market the house properly. The fact that a house is "run down" doesn't mean it's good material for flipping.

    8. House Flippers have driven up the market and caused considerable inflation in home value. Thus making it sooo much harder for the younger generation to move into homeownership. There’s a downside to people buying homes in order to make their living off of them. That’s just something that has always “bugged” me about all these house flipping shows on TV, they made it seem easy and profitable but never show how it hurts the market and makes buying a home unobtainable for some families, like in California. It seems fueled by GREED!

    9. Yes. I agree. I don't approve of house flipping for that reason.

  5. Construction is great but it is hard on your body. I hope Chad will be able to do this sort of work at 45. I wonder if any of the Bates family will use education to become a professional?

    1. I know people who have done construction well past 45, and Chad seems very fit. He’ll be fine.

    2. We've also seen that he's gifted in building and refurbishing furniture. I think he'll be fine. What did you mean by becoming a professional? Most of the adult children have college degrees and are earning money.

    3. One of my husband's relatives has a landscaping business (rock work, lawns, etc.) His business was making a gross income of over $100,000 while he was in his early 20's. He may not even be 30 yet and it went up to $2 million. He is now not doing the hands on work - but the owner. So it is possible to not have to do the hard labor.

    4. Perhaps Chad and Erin will become the next Chip and Joanna Gaines?

    5. My grandfather is a carpenter and is still working and he is nearing 80! People with active jobs can actually live longer!

    6. I know several carpenters and roofers who have wrecked their knees and back and can no longer work (in their mid-thirties). It can be dangerous work! For every man still working at 60, there are a dozen still working but in pain from chronic repetitive injuries. And a dozen more on workers comp or unemployment, who cannot work at all. Be careful Chad!

    7. Chad can do just about anything but that house looks like it should be torn down. The horizontal 4x4’s holding up the interior walls, yikes! Hope they know what their doing or all the walls will be cracking and shifting in no time. In most states a general contractor can be licensed having zero accumulative time under someone as an apprentice. That’s scary. Basically just decide one day you wanna be a general contractor and they say “great here’s your license”.

    8. Update: I anonymous above at 12:38. That young man has scaled back now (more recently).

  7. Of topic, but do any you know the flavor of Josie bates wedding cake?

  8. I don't know this family except what I see on this blog, TV show or Instagram but Chad seem to be an exceptionally fine young man. May God continue to bless his work and family.

  9. Love and admire Chad!

  10. Chad's namesakes-his Father and his Grandfather were both doctors. Probably if Chad's father had not gone to the Gothard side-Chad would also be a doctor.

  11. So awesome! I would LOVE to have him come here and help us out. We are redoing a bathroom and our back porch is sinking.
