It's no secret that Katie Bates hates being the center of attention. If you've been a long-time viewer of Bringing Up Bates, you have probably figured that out. But it's her 18th birthday, and the Bates family is not going to let this one slide by without doing something big. In this sneak peek of Thursday's new episode, they prepare for a surprise party.

      In the past year or so she's really started looking like Erin, to the point where sometimes I have to look twice.

    Why insist on “surprising” Katie if they know she doesn’t like it? They could have chosen to respect her and had a quiet non-camera family get together.

    Personally, I am shy. So a party that I knew about, I would dread. But if my family gathered my friends to surprise me, I would just be grateful for all of the thought that they put into it. Because even if I don't claim to want a party, who would turn down a surprise one with loads of friends and family?!
    Also, I think that they wanted to make her birthday stand out and special because Josie's wedding was on her birthday. So they didn't want her to inwardly feel overlooked.
