Don't Hate Your Neighbor

Gil and Kelly Bates
Gil and Kelly Bates

Kelly Bates: "People wake up and say they love the smell of coffee. I smell it and go, eww."
Zach Bates: "I could probably make world peace right now. Just throw your coffee out, straight for hot chocolate. World peace."

In a new Bates Around the World video, some of the Bates family members try a new type of coffee and have to guess what country it's from. As always, their reactions are entertaining.

  4. Why is UP doing that taste testing again with these people? They know that their pallets are quite unsophisticated and that they ate and drank awful foods growing up. This family is uncouth and insults other countries and their cuisine. Please stop it.

    1. Well I’d have to say that more people would probably rather see this segment than anyone that’s getting offended. I’m sure folks taste some of our American foods and not like them so much either. It’s really just lighthearted fun, nothing wrong with trying new things sometimes to see if you like it. On a positive note they’re open to trying out different cuisines to expand their ‘unsophisticated’ pallet, so at least give them an E for effort and points for trying.

    2. Why are you on the Bates blog if you are going to say rude comments about them?
The only one firing insults is you!
      You are rude and assuming.
I look forward to watching their show and feel they are a lovely family who shares their show and blogs to true fans.

    3. I love that you misspelled a word in the same sentence meant to accuse someone else of being unsophisticated.

I’m sure there are tons of people all over the world who would make very similar joking comments about cultural foods they’re unfamiliar with. For example my Chinese friend scoffs at all Italian food I try to serve him. So what? Is he uncouth, or are people with a southern accent the only uncouth ones? Open your mind, lady.

    4. It doesn’t matter if someone’s pallet is sophisticated or not. Everyone has different tastes, and there is nothing wrong with that!!! It is fun to try different foods and drinks from other countries.

    5. I don’t think there are any hard and fast rules that say you have to enjoy all foods from other countries in order to be considered cultured or civilized. I agree that these taste tests are rather pointless and not something that adds anything to their show.

    1. Me too! And each of our kids backpacked through Europe after university graduation, and they loved the coffee in every country, especially Italy!!!!

  8. It’s a long standing joke (and frustration) in New Zealand that Australians always try to take credit for our successes and trademarks. Kiwis actually take credit for the flat white, but I wasn’t surprised to see that it was accredited to Australia in this video. Disappointed, but not surprised. Incidentally, New Zealand has the best coffee in the whole world!! Not that I’m biased.
