'First Home and Strict Chaperones' Recap

Bringing Up Bates "First Home and Strict Chaperones"

  • At her apartment in Clinton, Tori, who earned a teaching degree in college, is watching Bradley, Kaci, Carson, and Brooklyn. She has been helping homeschool them, which she says enjoys. “Kade loves when all of them come over,” says Tori. “He gets so excited.”
  • “I guess with a bunch of kids the same age, it can be kind of crazy, but it was fine,” says Tori. “It’s just a matter of me being a step ahead of them in what I have planned because if you do one thing too long, then it gets crazy.”
  • Meanwhile, Kelton and Josie are at their new house doing renovation work. They closed on the house about 10 days after Willow was born. With help from Kelton’s dad, Lawson, Chad, Warden, and Kelton’s brothers (Grant and Carson), they put up a load-bearing beam. “It is such a blessing to have family, not only that is willing to help, but also extreme trade talent on both sides of the family,” says Kelton.
  • “…Thankfully, there’s a lot of us, and you know we’re going to pitch in,” says Zach.
  • On another day, Evan comes over to help with electrical. Carlin helps Josie paint. “It’s just so fun to have sisters that are going through so many of the same things,” says Josie.
  • Later, it’s photo shoot time for the Bates Sisters Boutique. “The problem is, us Bates are all short, and people kept asking, ‘I’m tall, what do the dresses look like on a tall person,’” says Kelly. So they invite Chaney to model for them.
  • “The sisters made me feel so comfortable and special and definitely pretty because they did my makeup, my hair, everything, so it was a lot of fun,” says Chaney.
  • Trace takes Chaney on a bowling date with Jeb and Judson as chaperones. Chaney dominates, with multiple strikes and spares, even though she claims that she doesn’t bowl often. Jeb plants himself between them on the bench. “I think Mr. and Mrs. Bates would be very proud of how strong Jeb was today for us,” says Chaney. “He really held up.”

  1. I was trying to figure out what was so different about this episode than others. I think it was that we were actually able to see more of the siblings relationship and less of Gil and Kelly. I love seeing Katie and Micheal talking and Carlin with Josie.

I don't think we need Kelly to do a voice over for everything. Let the actions on the screen tell the story. I hope we see more of the siblings and less of the voice over.

  2. "I guess with a bunch of kids the same age, it can be kind of crazy, but it was fine,” says Tori. A typical claim has MANY more kids of the same age together. If you can't handle 4, you certainly wouldn't be able to handle 24!

    1. The kids are different ages plus she has her baby to take care of as well. If she was teaching a class, all of the kids would be the appropriate age for school, and her child wouldn’t be there.

    2. She isn't in a traditional classroom setting. It is much different having four kids in your home than having 24 in a classroom. Bless her for sharing her gifts to help homeschool her extended family.

  3. Making the younger kids is ingenious if you're the parents, because the kids will repeat everything the couple says. But I wouldn't want to be the couple! 😄

    1. Oops, I left out the key word "chaperone," kind of a key word there. :)

    2. Why not just video tape the whole date?

  4. I felt uncomfortable for Chaney watching Erin and Kelly pushing way too hard. The "date" with the boys, whether or not that was just staged for viewers, was taking things too far. No wonder these guys are hesitant to pursue relationships. I am sure they all recall Zach's cancelled wedding fiasco and Nathan's failed relationship. If I were one of the boys I would ask the family to chill. I don't blame Chaney for bailing out.

    1. @8:32 ITA. I felt so uncomfortable for Chaney also. The push about her name being changed to Bates, moving to TN, and that she would work for them was so much. Slow down, Erin and Kelly. We get it you want the boys to get married but you have to chill out.

We have no idea what Chaney wants to do with her life. She could have wanted to paint or be a writer or whatever but that was totally ignore to be a model for Bates clothing.

I hope the sisters see how their actions can be overbearing for someone and make them run.

    2. Kelly even said she would buy Chaney a ticket back to Texas. Meaning after she moved to Tennessee she could go back for visits. Erin and Kelly pushed way to hard. Real life dating on TV is not possible! Leave that to the actors.
