The Determined Mama Jane

Competing at Carlin (Bates) Stewart's baby shower

"You never know what Mama Jane's gonna do."
-Kelly Bates

Sweet Mama Jane a cheater? No way! The Bates are all very competitive, but they come by it honestly. At Carlin's baby shower (video below), the Bates matriarch is determined to win the marshmallow game, but her methods are called into question by the rest of the clan.

    1. My family called my great-grandmother "Mom". I think grandma's get their names in a lot of different ways ✌🏽

    2. Why is it strange? Different cultures have different names for grandma and grandpa. Maybe it's that way where they live. It sure sounds better than MEEMAW and PEEPAW.

  4. The Bates family doesn't hold back telling how competetive they all are. It makes me wonder if that characteristic, along with pride, doesn't come into play with their focus on having had so many children. They say they let God decide, but I think there's more to it than that. Kids can certainly be a blessing. However, I'm afraid that the message the Bates give is that not using contraception is something God expects from everyone. Given certain circumstances, it may not be a wise thing for some people to have any children at all, let alone 19.

    1. They have said on their shows for many years, Bringing up Bates and United Bates of America, this is their choice. It may not be other people's choice.

  5. Wow! Your shower games, Kelly Jo? This is one of the main reasons I have a problem with this family. It seems that the other families these girls marry into are not allowed to host a baby shower or anything. It seems that only Kelly and her daughters can plan and I have a problem with that. Yes, the show is called Bringing up Bates but would it really be hard to share the love.

I would love to see the girls and their relationship with the in-laws. It's clear that Carlin, Micheala and Josie have a great bond with them. It would be nice to see the others family bonding and not just on their social media posts.

    Just my thoughts.

    1. This game was actually facilitated by Evan’s sister as well as the other games at the shower.

    2. This game was actually facilitated by Evan’s sister. She also did the baby food game in the episode.

    3. Original poster @9:57 am. That's not what I'm saying 1026 or 10:27. Kelly acts like only she and her family can plan activities for the girls. She called it their party not Carlin and Evans.

This is one of the reasons why the Bates Boys cannot get married. Kelly pushes the other family out. Hence why Josie was adamapted that her friend plan the baby shower. Why we don't see Alyssa's birth scenes or baby showers.

They only let Evan's sister plan the games because Erin and Whitney just had babies. Yes, the show is Bringing up Bates but it's okay to share the wealth of love around.

    4. I think you are making something out of nothing. Kelly said "our," not "my." Anything involving their family is "theirs." That's how grammar works. It doesn't mean the other family isn't part of it.

  7. I think the reason why the Bateses and Duggars are so competitive over minor things like shower games is because they were never allowed to be competitive with anything in real life, such as academics, sports, and careers.

    1. I don't think so. Being competitive is a personality trait.

    2. Then how do you explain all the people who go to public and private schools who are competitive?

    3. I understand what the first poster meant. People who are competitive usually compete in organized sports, academics, competitions, career advancement or other avenues. The Bates (especially the girls/women) haven't had those options available to them, so they express their competitiveness in baby shower games and the like.

  9. They were not Kelly jo’s games. Watch again, it was Evans sister who planned the games!

    1. I've been to some Italian and Polish baby showers are they are huge, 150 women, and microphones are necessary for sure.

    2. You probably haven't been to showers the size of the Bates'.

The shower was held in a large room with no sound buffering. It was very difficult to hear because of all the chattering! We were there!

    4. I was at a bridal shower of about 100 women, where they had a microphone.

  12. I don't think it was right of Mama Jane to do what she did with the marshmallows at the end of the game. I would not have expected that from her.
