Shuffleboard Bates


"In true Bates form, let's have a fun day. Now we haven't prepared for this at all, but we do have food. So let's get out here and make us whatever game we're going to play and hope it works."

In this extended scene from Bringing Up Bates season seven, the Bates guys get together to complete a project. Or at least to attempt to complete a project. This time, they are hoping to make a shuffleboard.

      Maybe (a) they were doing something else or (b) had no interest in helping.

      All the boys were interested and all the girls were not? Seems strange. I wonder if there is a push towards gender roles that make the kids hesitant to say what they really want to do. None of the boys seem particularly interested in this activity or competent at it (except Zach, who seems to know everything!)

      We all know the the Bates have a view of “girl” things and “boy” things. No one should act surprised by this at this point. It’s how they do things whether or not others agree.

      10:50, in my family there are 3 girls and a boy. I can guarantee you my sisters and I would have had no interest in that.

      Some of the girls may have had an interest in helping but were discouraged/shamed by the implicit, largely unspoken expectation that only boys do such things.

      Some of the boys may have preferred to be at home, but again, felt pressured to satisfy unspoken gender expectations.

      I don't get what's so wrong about Gil wanting to do a project with the guys. Guys and girls don't have to do everything together.

    I guess big news is being kept quiet and the Bates are revealing more mundane things going on with their life. Nothing wrong with that; but, you know they must have another courtship or pregnancy to reveal and are waiting on making it public for some reason.
