Bringing Up Bates "Smitten in the Smokies"
- Travis arrives in Tennessee to celebrate Katie’s birthday. “Katie loves to remind me that she’s five months older than me,” says Travis, smiling. “She loves to say I love older women…” When he arrives, he surprises Katie with a new dress and plans for a dinner date.
- “The problem is, we’re running out of chaperones,” laughs Kelly. Katie and Travis end up choosing Addallee and Ellie.
- Whitney and Carlin pick up the key for their storefront in Rocky Top. With help from Zach and Chad, they make plans for the space. “Honestly, the thought of a storefront baffles me,” says Carlin. “Like, no way we’re already here.” The ladies are concerned that they will grow out of this space as quickly as they grew out of the warehouse in Zach and Whitney’s backyard.
- Later, Gil, Kelly, Lawson, Katie, and Travis take the younger kids to Gatlinburg. They ride a bus up to the ziplines at Anakeesta. Unfortunately, Judson, Jeb, and Callie don’t quite meet the 70-pound weight requirement.
- While the rest of the group enjoys the ziplines, Kelly, Katie, and Travis take Judson, Jeb and Callie gem-mining. “Is there one that has like a ring in it?” Katie asks the employee. “I think Trav wants that one.”
- “We all thought there was going to be a ring in Katie or Travis’,” says Callie. She and Jeb agree that that would be the perfect proposal plan. Travis says he has a year and a half left of school, but Katie hints that he might propose sooner.
- “For me, when I’m thinking about Katie and Travis, the word engagement is something I’m just trying to pretend is way down the road, so we’ll have to see,” says Gil. “We just pray it’s a long time down the road. Let’s just say, nobody’s talked to me about it yet.”
Oh jeez, I thought it said smitten in the smoke shop when I glanced at the post, haha
ReplyDeleteI’m with Gil...much prayer and more time for these two to mature.
ReplyDeleteSo Katie needs a chaperone but Lawson does not?
ReplyDeleteSure, she is a woman. So the consequences of any “mistake” would be visible to the world.
DeleteBut the consequences of "mistake" with Tiffany would also be visible!
DeleteThis answer doesn’t make sense to me. Lawson’s girlfriend is also a woman (and quite a young one too - only 22). So the consequences of any ‘mistake’ would be visible to the world with her too.
DeleteKatie still lives at home, Lawson is older.
DeleteI think it’s a rule with the family that those dating need a chaperone. When Lawson and his girl are in TN, they have a chaperone. But when he is in LA, there doesn’t seem to be one. Perhaps it’s just a “house rule”.
DeleteKatie’s immature behavior around Travis is cringeworthy. Reminding him of her birthday all year, grabbing at the gift, screeching over him with questions about the date instead of just seeming genuinely happy to see him again. I’m almost afraid to watch the rest of the episode for fear of when she’s going to try to smear food on him. If that’s her desperate opportunity to touch him, put Travis out of his misery and let them hold hands already.
ReplyDeleteMO- 2:50PM, I was thinking the exact same thing. Maybe all the fuss about her behavior has sunk in and she'll act mature from here forward. We can only hope. Travis seems okay with it- Love is blind? Haha! :o)
DeleteThese girls absolutely take all of the fun out of it by asking to become engaged.
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree! I remember how Tori was so rudely after a ring from Bobby, it seemed that’s all she cared about. Now Katie’s behaving the same way. Hopefully Katie isn’t as rude and disinterested in the wedding planning process as Tori. That was hard to watch.

Delete@8:24 and 1:43...Why do you post the same comments?
DeleteIt is odd behavior and all but their one moment to have the lime-light. Try as we might to focus on an individual’s needs, I would think in a fam that large the quieter milestones in life may get overlooked, so these big moments are all encompassing and some of them seem hyper-excited and maybe all they have 🥲. It doesn’t mean people aren’t due their accolades, allowed to enjoy the moment or her less humble but sometimes in the rush to get to the finish line, staying in the moment is hard or forgotten. I also imagine there’s a lot of sharing and individual achievement or attention aside from engagement, wedding or a baby announcement might be overlooked as a sacrifice at times. She is young and sees the attention friends and other siblings have received and probably just wants that, too. Plus, a relationship is exciting.
I was in the military and snuck a name plate under my class A jacket when I was first married while waiting for the official change, we all have little moments and show them differently.
The hounding by the kiddos and her is a bit weird and rude though. It’s one thing to talk and shop for rings together a little to see what you like and have a budget for but that was akin to begging or something. I hope it was staged/scripted.
I think Torri and Katy are tied in the cringe-worthy “hounding for the engagement ring” category.
ReplyDeleteKaty does not appear to be mature enough for this type of relationship. I hope marriage is years away for this couple.
Why would Gil make comment about Katie being engaged? Said nobody talked to him , hope is down the road. She can get engaged when she chooses she is 20! Strange comment.
ReplyDelete@8:12...I think they get it from Kelly. I remember how she took out her empty notebook at a meal with Michaella and Brandon and asked when their engagement would be!,
ReplyDeleteThis family should come off the air before they have some major issues they don’t want the whole world to know. Family is sacred and needs protection

ReplyDeleteNo one is perfect. We all have said, and or done things, we wish we could reword or even take back.
ReplyDeleteThat’s just life. But as far as this show goes, I hope it has a very long run for years yet. I would be very sad if it were no longer on my short list of weekly shows I never miss. I want all the Bates to know they are appreciated no matter what they read on this blog or in magazines.
We enjoyed the show very much and just love the Bates. We enjoyed all the activities they did. I can't wait to see the relationships blossom. Natasha b
