Watch Nathan's Engagement

Nathan Bates and Esther Keyes

As most of you know, Nathan Bates proposed to Esther Keyes on May 22nd. The show went on break just one month later, so fans were not able to see the engagement covered on the show. To give you a glimpse at their big moment, which was the culmination of a three-day, romantic adventure, they uploaded a video to YouTube (link below). Nathan and Esther will start their journey as husband and wife in October.

  2. This is so staged . She knew before the filming she was going to be asked to marry him. Why not a normal quiet engagement ? Its not a competition, though seems to be with this family.Sad very wordly people.

    1. I know. A quiet, private engagement in a special spot is so much more meaningful. Imagine the cost of this engagement! The videographer, the drone, the helicopter, the decorations, the professionals hired, the editing. .. it goes on and on.

    2. @9:58-filming these staged events is how they earn a living!

    3. Why do you have to assume the worst instead of thinking that Nathan wanted to do it in a beautiful setting with a little getaway trip on top of that?

    4. I don't like to jump to just the negative but I have to agree with this post. I don't know why every engagement has to be so elaborate with huge trips that might as well be honeymoons. I would just love for one to do a more simple engagement like Josiah's. Even Jessa's was staged with the treasure hunt but they didn't run off to a 3 day weekend in another state. I also liked Michael and Brandon's engagement. Micael's was so touching and it was a surprise the way he did it. It's just too over the top for me now especially since they ALL have to go on trips now to get engaged. Just go to a nice spot locally or in a nearby scenic town and truly surprise her with something romantic.

    5. Don't forget that Zach took Whitney to Florida to propose on the beach and they weren't pressured by being on a TV show. There was no show back then.

    6. @11:30-I think the was a show “United Bates of America” on TLC when Zach got engaged to Whitney.

    7. 8:06, that's not true. United Bates was on in 2012 and they got engaged and married in 2013.

  3. Nathan and Esther are an amazingly fun couple to watch. Their love and total commitment to one another is so evident. Nathan’s face says it all - from his eyes to his smile to his dimples. He is so happy!!! And you can tell that Esther is absolutely in love with this man. It’s great that they agreed to share this with their fans on this blog. I look forward to the wedding on Bringing Up Bates.

  4. Looks like they broke the side hug ruleπŸ˜†.

    1. Actually I think they broke more rules than that, did you see the scene when sitting on the cliffs and they were filming from above that he was moving in to kiss her but they shut the camera, I think they won't say it now that they are kissing as they will mention it on the show, well Zach and Whitney and Alyssa and John admitted to kissing before marriage (Alyssa and John when they were answering questions on utube) so it's obvious other siblings will follow suit, and Nathan is the oldest to get married isn't he so he can make his own rules I presume.

    2. And, like Lawson, they appear to travel together without chaperones.

    3. Side hugs are a Duggar family rule. Even though the two families have a lot of similarities, they also have differences. Side hugs were never a Bates family rule. Michael even addressed that years ago when she was in a courtship with Brandon. She said they hug everybody so of course she would hug her boyfriend.

    4. Most of their kids kiss before marriage. I know Josie said she and Kelton did, Carlin and Evan waited though.

    5. The family has always said that the couple makes their own courtship/engagement rules but I've questioned that since Zach and Whitney felt they had to "confess" their kiss. If they decided in their rules it was ok, why the need to confess. And the concept of a couple old enough to be engaged -whether it be 18 or 27- having a chaperone who might be only 6 or 7 is completely ridiculous to me. How can anyone have a conversation about how to handle their money or how many children to have with a 6y/o hanging around? I think Jed and Jud's behavior when Trace and Lacey went bowling may have been what put her off their relationship. She looked very taken aback when they inserted themselves between her and Trace. If one of the girls said "no chaperones" would Gil and Kelly allow that?

But no matter how I feel, it is their life. But I do hope they are sincere about the couple establishing their own boundaries.

    6. Well, since most of what we know is based on videos, we can guarantee that at least during the time of the interview they had a chaperone—the videographer.

Also, Zach and Whitney’s relationship was the first male Bates’ marriage. I think we can safely assume that the family has changed and adapted as more children have grown up. Obviously if we know about all of these “confessions” now the family has dealt with it enough to make it public and still be in relationship.

    1. Clearly!!!if If were one of the sisters, I’d have quite a bit to say to my parents!!!

    2. Maybe the age makes the difference not that fact that they're boys. The girls all got engaged really young. Lawson and Nathan are in the mid - late 20ies already.

    3. 3:32 Michael was older, I think, in her mid-twenties. I remember she brought a chaperone along when she went to visit Brandon in Texas. It appears that there are different rules for the males in the family. It's the IBLP way.

    4. Michaela was engaged at age 25 and would never have been allowed to travel here and there with Brandon, nor get so close to him. They definitely give the boys more freedom

    5. 3:32 It isn’t like the girls were minors, they were all adults. They should have had the same rules.

    6. MO- The boys have always had a separate set of rules from the girls... It's sad IMO. :o(

  7. It's so romantic until you realize that someone was just a couple feet away with a camera the whole time.

  10. As I was reading all these comments I was appalled at such negativity.if these people were raised in the church or even knew what God said about purity before marriage this wonderful family would be woohoo respected..as a Christian I look at the way they have raised their children and I applaud them..Mr & Mrs Bates have laid out BIBLICAL rules in their family and they have done a wonderful job in following them at that..i love watching this family..i can't wait for Thurs night..its such a joy to watch their show..they are the real deal..if you know anything about the Bible then you know how they truly love the Lord. Instead of making negative comments about their dating rules please get a King James Bible and get educated on how we are suppose to live..God wrote these rules NOT man and we are to live and represent God in a Biblical way like The Bates Family..how ever these children choose to get engaged that is their day..i have never seen people tell others how to ask a girl how to propose..there is NO rules or a book to tell us how to propose..it comes from the HEART!! GOD BLESS THE BATES AND I LOOK FORWARD TO ALL THE UNIQUE PROPOSALS WEDDINGS AND OF COURSE ALL THOSE GRAND CHILDREN!! KEEP SERVING GOD AND FOLLOWING HIS WAYS..YOUR FAMILY IS TRULY BLESSED..

  12. It's funny how the Bates parents have failed to mention that they have a whole separate set of rules for their courting (dating) sons. Why have they not gone out of their way to explain this on TV, like they have with their courting and chaperoned daughters?

    1. Maybe there isn’t a different set of rules for the boys. Once they are not living with their parents anymore, they don’t make the rules for them. I don’t think Nathan and Lawson have lived with their parents for a while, so their parents can give advice but not rules.

    2. 9:39 In the IBLP faith, daughters live at home until they get married. There are differnent rules for them.
