A Graduation and a House

It's a big week for the Stewarts! Zade turns one month old today, which is hard to believe. And after five years, Evan is graduating from electrician school. To top it all off, Carlin and Evan are about to close on their first home. The couple will celebrate three years of marriage on May 25th.

  1. I am sure it's a nice house! Still, it's rather sad to see two young people tie themselves down to a mortgage and home care responsibilities at such a young age. They had so little time to explore life.

    2. Nothing sad about owning a home!

    3. A house is usually a good investment. Interest rates have been low, house prices are rising quickly, and young couples can build up equity by owning. A mortgage in the 3 or 4% range is a good deal (our first house was 12%), and your home's value can go up 10% or more yearly. So it's a wise use of money, as long as you don't buy "too much" house to begin with. We always kept a mortgage with a small interest rate (refinanced it down several times over the years). We didn't pay our current house off because our available money was making more by sitting in the stock market (bringing in 12% - 15% annually, vs. the 3.25% interest rate we were paying on our mortgage). We paid the house off last year but only because our stocks had gone gangbusters for the last few years and drawing out the little we still owed on the house was a drop in that bucket by then. The house is worth 5 times what we originally paid for it, so that wasn't a bad purchase.

    4. I disagree. I have some friends who married at age 19 and got their first home prior to the wedding and of course pay a mortgage. They both have good jobs (he works in construction and went to trade school at age 17 to learn while finishing high school and she works as a secretary for an Amish family's business,in which she learned to do from 1 year of Bible college). They were wise to wait to start family and plan to try after they have been married for 3-5 years and have more saved to afford to have kids and take time now to enjoy life just the 2 of them.

    5. There can be more freedom in commitments than in just being free to wander is what I’ve been told.

    6. Ha. A mortgage can be cheaper than rent, plus you don't have to deal with landlords and can do whatever you want with your house. More power to them!

    7. @ 722 a mortgage isn't always cheaper then rent. It depends on how many home repairs you have to do monthly. If you don't know how to do them yourself or have family to do them for you it can be quiet costly. So sometimes it can actually be cheaper to rent.

    8. 9:14, that is exactly what I said. "Can be."

  2. I wish the Duggars would send their kids to trade school instead of turning them out in the world with no licenses. Ripping out drywall and pounding nails as a teen does not make you a licensed contractor. They could work for anyone if they got their licenses. They would not have to depend on family to find them work.

    1. I think a lot of them actually have their contractors license. You don’t have to go to college for that

    4. What the Duggars do it's not your
      Business. Maybe trade school
Is not for them. Focus on your
      Life not time.

    5. I totally agree. Working for JB is not being independent. Glad to see the Bates following a better path.

    6. This post is to celebrate Evan’s accomplishment, not talk about the Duggers.

    7. Really 5:25? Do you think any of the boys actually sat for the necessary exams? 6:25 Who in the Duggar family graduated from college? I don't mean online Bible courses here and there, I mean an accredited college bachelor's degree with 4 years of credits.

    9. For 5:25 There are no contractors licensed in Arkansas with the last name Duggar. You can check the Arkansas Licensing Board website.

    10. @6:53 Would you want to buy a house if you knew it was worked on by guys without licenses? That makes it the business of all of us, to know there are houses out there like that.

  4. Congratulations to Evan graduating electrician school!👨‍🎓🥳🎉 May all his hard work pay off to have a successful career. Hope maybe he and Chad can team up together and work for Chad's construction company, Paine Construction. And congratulations on the Stewart's finally getting their new house after waiting for 3 months. Wished that they could of gotten their realtor to speed things up to get the house and move in before the baby came so Carlin could of finished nesting and getting things all ready beforehand.

    1. The Stewarts explained in detail on their YouTube channel why their home purchase was delayed. It hinged on the sellers being able to find another home to buy. In this crazy market, there's a lot out of your control. There was no speeding things up.

  10. I truly mis seeing your family on tv. I honestly understand why and hate the reason if it had to do with others being rude or disrespectful . I do thank you for at least sharing this way.

    1. Questions and mild disagreement is not hate. I would hate for this blog to become an echo chamber of "Yay, Bates!" How interesting would that be? You need to learn to tolerate people having a different opinion than yours.
