The Bates family gathered together for their annual I Love You Day celebration. This was Erin and Chad Paine's first year living out of town, and they had a 10-hour drive to reach Gil and Kelly's house. The Paines uploaded a YouTube video showing footage from the festivities, as well as some tips from Erin on surviving a road trip with kids.

Always thought I Love You Day was such a great idea from the first time I saw it on the show. It was fun to see the kids picking the papers with names on them and buying presents for the person they picked. Now so many of them have their own kids. Such a loving family.
ReplyDeleteI don't enjoy seeing waste, so I have a better idea for I Love You Day. Get together as a family and skip the fancy decorations, costumes, and props. Use the money saved to go to the grocery store together and load up some carts. Take everything to the nearest food bank. What better way to say I Love You to your fellow man than to help feed them. What better way to teach your children to be compassionate citizens. Jesus fed the multitude. He didn't stay home and play games while others went hungry.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they do plenty of that every other day of the year. They teach service to others right from when the little ones are born. Nothing wrong with having one day for yourselves.
DeleteI agree. A party is always fun, but instead of buying each other presents it would be great if they bought and took food to a local food bank. This family has plenty and none of them need more stuff.
DeleteA bit harsh, don’t you think? Did you realize that some of their family members were in Turkey helping the earthquake victims and couldn’t make it to the family celebration? Who knows what else they are helping with that we don’t even know about.
DeleteThey already do all that you mentioned throughout the year they even go on mission trips, they already have been thaught to help the less needy, I'm sure they donate to food banks throughout the year, but I love you day is to show how much they care about each other which is just as important as showing that you care for humanity and having fun together is done so the little ones can build memories with grandparents, aunts and uncles, and brothers and sisters that they could easily forget about if they didn't have special days like this because many of the older ones married and moved out when the younger ones were little, that actually happened to me ,when I was four years old my older brother moved abroad and just visited twice a year and I didn't have a close relationship with him,but then that didn't matter to him because he was selfish, nothing like this beautiful family who love each other very much.
DeleteMission trips. All they do are make the people who go feel better. Nobody has any business trying to tell others less fortunate what religion they "need" to follow. That's the underlying idea of the Bates or Duggar mission trips - conversions. Even if these families do give food other times during the year, one more time giving never hurts. Want to let your family know you love them? Just tell them. Don't need to throw a party to do that.
DeleteGeez I do think angry demons who can’t possibly understand fun and happiness are on here commenting. Repent and Jesus will come into your heart and wash away the demonic dark influence you are carrying with you. Enjoy life and have fun, Jesus loves happy people.
Delete@8:05 Nobody is demonized. Are you an expert on the topic?
DeleteI do wonder if the tween and teens think it’s a great time?
Delete@8:01-Im curious about their opinions of this party, too!!!
DeleteIt’s a nice tradition but I think the costume aspect of it is strange. I’m sure most of them have never heard of these characters as they don’t read mainstream literature or watch regular TV.
ReplyDeleteThey watch a lot more TV than you might think. I doubt they've ever read a Sherlock Holmes book though. A lot of those stories have scary or supernatural themes, quintessentially Gothic in nature from that Victorian era. Yet the Bates dressed their children as Holmes, which tells me they don't realize who they were trying to emulate. They should have done more research.
DeleteChristians homeschoolers read Sherlock Holmes, believe me. I enjoyed them as a kid!
DeleteI personally like the costume idea. Think of the research that goes into their theme for the young and old. They try and stay as authentic as possible and what a wonderful and different way of learning for all the littles!
DeleteI love to see the family gatherings. So happy they had a wonderful celebration.
ReplyDeleteErin and Chad still have plenty to learn--their oldest is 7. They should be learning from older parents. This is not the time to be giving advice to others, raise your kids first!
ReplyDeleteThey ARE raising their kids and quite successfully by the looks of it. Their children are very well behaved for their ages. Why shouldn’t they share their methods for accomplishing that? Also, how do you know they’re not learning from older parents? They are most certainly at least watching Erin’s fantastic parents for tips on raising teenagers.
DeleteErin certainly CAN give advice! Iron sharpens iron. When my daughters were younger we moms shared tips with one another. We learned so much from each other for which I'm grateful.
DeleteThis blog needs an update. New spouses, babies, and a new future daughter-in-law aren't even mentioned. Pictures need to be updated too. Just wondering why it hasn't been updated.
ReplyDeleteEllie does have a life of her own and plus if the families haven't supplied her with photos then she can't update the site.
DeleteWE HAVE THAT IN THE KESSNER FAMILY, BUT OUR DAY IS THE OSCARS, WE HAVE THEMES, AND WE GET ALLLLL DRESSED UP!!!!! I WANT TO COME TO YOUR NEXT "I LOVE U DAY'!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI loved your show and wondered how you all were doing. I just came across this blog today. How wonderful!
