The Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) just made a big announcement that affects the Bates greatly. Many of you know that Lydia (Romeike) Bates and her family had recently been told to prepare for deportation back to Germany. As they soak up the newborn days with baby Ryker, Trace and Lydia, as well as the entire Bates family, have been praying for good news.
More than one hundred thousand people signed the petition, and the government has taken notice. According to the HSLDA, on Wednesday, October 11th, ICE is expected to grant the Romeike family a one-year delay of deportation.
Now let's hope the family appreciates this AND THEY GET THERE ACT TOGETHER AND DONT WHINE ANYMORE.

DeleteOk; so what will this family DO with that one year? I sincerely hope that they ALL work on being here legally and apply for citizenship. Their homeschooling persecution asylum isn't working for them. They all need to just apply for US citizenship. Why haven't they done that in 15 years? Lydia's father said their reason for homeschooling was that his children were being bullied in school; not religious reasons. Still, a strange situation.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think they are eligible to apply for citizenship. They’re kind of in no man’s land; they were granted asylum and then it was taken away by the Obama administration. So they were given “indefinitely deferred status.”

Delete@2:31pm,when my autistic son was bullied at regular school nothing was sorted out because it was not severe bullying as in physically violent, same as the Romeike kids,luckily with persistance I managed to get my son into a special education school and he's been happy there and made friends which he was not able to make in regular school,you really should look at different sides of the story, how would you like to be forced to be friends with people who mistreat you.

DeleteAnon 9:03. I HAVE read the updates and that is why I don't understand what is going on with this family. Each update contains a new wrinkle that doesn't match the previous story. This "bullying" one is the latest. Since their German born children are no longer in school, there's no reason for them to stay here.

ReplyDeleteApplying for US citizenship sounds like a good plan to me. I successfully did in 1977 and have never regretted it. I have enjoyed watching the Bates Family over the years and appreciate their testimony and values. Perhaps the right thing to do is to seek legal domicile in this great country.

I did it for thirteen years of my life, all my family, relatives and christian friends did and we all survived perfectly well. .Anon 8:04. We only have the Romeike's word for what happened in Germany. However, since all their German born children are now adults, none of the issues they complain about exist. Time for them to go home or do whatever they need to do to become US citizens.
DeleteYay! Praise God! I'm so glad the petition helped in some form to help the Romeike family. Hope they take advantage of this next year to try and go through the proper procedure's to ALL become US citizen's at last to stay in America the rest of their lives and never have to face deportation like they did again.

They would have boasted or whined about their efforts a nd failed efforts, but they did not even keep their german passports up to date...
But if someone takes the trouble a d does the work for them, that should be rewarded. Though I don't believe they will do more than offer prayer of thanks. Wichtig should only be the beginnend of a proportional thank you.

ReplyDeletevery sorry to hear this actually. extremely disappointed in our government. in all this time they did absolutely nothing to gain citizenship and aren't going to do it now. they don't care about rules and will do what they want, when they want. they left germany because they didn't want to follow the rules and now want the us to look the other way? why? because they are christians? because their daughter married someone from a celebrity family? you read all the time about 'good' people being deported for the same reason - their time ran out. it's time we realized that the us has something called 'separation of church and state' for a reason and this is perfect example of why

Not wanting your children to be exposed to public school is NOTHING by comparison. People in Ukraine are bravely using makeshift schools. People in Israel have had their schools destroyed. I'm not convinced that this family had grounds for asylum in the US and their claim of religious persecution. Germany's compulsory education law applies to everyone, not just Christians.

ReplyDeleteYes, Mr. R. clearly stated that they had their children in school in Germany but they were being bullied; hence their leaving Germany for the U.S. Nothing to do with religious beliefs. They wanted to take their kids out of school due to this and homeschool them but they were not allowed to homeschool in Germany. Had nothing to do with their religious "persecution". Mr. R. said nothing about their religious beliefs causing them to leave Germany. So, there's this.

ReplyDeleteIf this family is here on a visitor's visa and visitors don't typically have work permits how do they support themselves? I think we need to ask these sorts of questions before jumping on a bandwagon to keep them here.
