Kelly's Septic Scare

Last week, Kelly Bates drove to South Carolina to visit Papa Bill and Mama Jane, as she does frequently due to Papa Bill's deteriorating health. While she was there, the back pain that she had been experiencing suddenly became a lot worse. She was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with a kidney stone and a kidney infection, which turned septic and landed her in the ICU. Gil quickly drove in from Tennessee and refused to leave his wife's side. The Bates kids and grandchildren began arriving, as Kelly's condition worsened and it was unclear whether she would recover. After a lot of prayer, quality care from the hospital staff, and plenty of encouragement from her beloved family, Kelly started to turn a corner. She had her second surgery two days ago and was released from the hospital yesterday. Join us in praising God for her miraculous recovery. Trace and Lydia Bates made a video detailing the situation.

    1. So, if someone dies from septic shock, as man people do, is god not good?

    2. God was good to give her sepsis?

    3. @7:26 I have never heard a rational answer to that kind of question. People are quick to praise God when something good happens to them but they avoid discussing that when things have a bad outcome. Sometimes they say "He/She is in a better place now" or "It was his/her time," but that's very cold comfort. Besides, is it always "God's" credit or do we forget that humans do good things too? In this case, doctors, nurses, medicines, and a whole lot of science behind them all. Praying that none of that has to change in the coming days...

    4. They mean God was so good to heal her.

    5. 6:12 But if someone dies of the same thing, what do they mean then?

    6. Anon 12:56 That is rather the elephant in the room. A man in my church would get a new job only to be laid off from it a few months later. This action went on for several years. Everyone would praise God when he got a new job, but no one ever blamed God when he lost the new job he was so excited to get. Nor did anyone know why he was put through that emotional roller coaster.

    7. That is what faith is....the belief that God is good no matter what happens. Acceptance of what happens to us without complaining is part of that faith. And, praising God regardless of the circumstances is also part of that faith. We know that someday, all questions will be answered and every tear wiped away. Until then it is our goal to live with humility in the face of our Creator and be at peace with whatever He does to us. Because there is always a reason, whether it is something we can grasp or not.
Faith is not ignoring of difficulties, it is simply humble enough to recognize that the human mind can grasp the mystery of what goes on behind the scenes.
Ultimately, whether a person believes in God or not is their choice. But, those who do, don't have prove it or have a perfect answer to every question. That is the point of faith, acknowledging that, we don'thave the answers, but trusting that He does. It's a decision you choose. To be at peace, or to be angry and question everything. To focus on everything we recieve as a beautiful and powerful gift or to see only the broken and the shadow.
Most people not only see just the darkness in the world, but also close their eyes to the light. Some of us want to live with our eyes wide open. And that means training ourselves to see the lights in every darkness. God doesn't make mistakes. So we sit back and let Him figure out our lives, how He wants. Peace is a beautiful thing.

    8. Life is so much easier as an atheist. You don't have to be searching for answers or waiting for miracles. You make things happen yourself.

    9. @8:02 I see no reason for child abuse, cancer, or people dying from COVID, starvation, war... or any of the misery going on in the world. If I were an all-powerful and loving creator god, suffering would never have been on the menu in the first place. Considering God created humans without invitation, that's the least he could have done.

  7. I wish her a speedy recovery. I've almost died due to medical issues three times. Fortunately, no one in my family thought they needed to film it.

  8. Wow, prayers for recovery! I understand how you guys feel! My mom had kidney stones last year in the summer and she had horrible pain and had to go to the clinic. That got taken care of easily though, no surgery then in November she had major back pain and fever and had to go in the er and they thought she had a kidney infection (because of her past history)and that she might be sepsis and we were all so scared, but it turned out to be Lymes and a co infection with the Lymes. She's okay now. I am so glad Kelly Jo is recovering. I empathize with you guys. prayers!

  16. Kelly had surgery one day and she was sent home the next day? That seems really heartless on the part of the hospital. I hope she recovers quickly.

    1. Not heartless. One heals better @ home . Less bacteria also. Rethink your comment !

      Delete
    2. There's not "less bacteria" at home. Houses are absolutely filthy on a microscopic level! You come in contact with millions of bacteria, spores, mites, etc. daily in your house. The only thing hospitals might add is a risk of room-to-room contamination by staff going about their work - but there's infection reduction protocol intended to minimize that. There isn't that protocol in your house. Do you wash your hands or sanitize them before and after you touch anyone at home, every time? Wear gloves and masks? Sanitize all surfaces constantly? Filter the air for microbes?

    3. Who knows what kind of insurance these people have or don't have. Hospitals aren't charities or vacation spas. You go home at the earliest because there are lots of people who don't have insurance and that strains healthcare for everybody.

      Delete
    4. @6:34 hospitals recirculate their air from room to room not from outside. I guarantee you there is more bacteria in a hospital then in the average home. Hospitals are where the sick folk all go. Most homes are not constantly full of sick folk.

      Delete
    5. @10:09 Hospitals use some of the most sophisticated air filtration systems there are. There are filtration standards with assigned MERV ratings for different areas of the hospital from operating rooms to patient rooms. Many different types of filters and pre-filters are used, from HEPA to carbon to UV to gas filtration. Those are not found in the average home. I suggest you read up on those, along with infection reduction standards for medical staff, as well as cleaning/disinfecting methods for custodial staff. All of those are way better than at home, for the exact reason you said - there are germs - and hospitals are designed to deal with them to keep them from being a problem. Ever have C. diff. or norovirus in your household? You know how they spread through families. It's next to impossible to keep those spores and virus particles from spreading in a house full of wood surfaces, carpet, and upholstered furnishings - things you don't find in hospital rooms.

  20. My pastor says that God sends these kinds of trials to discipline, correct or improve us. I can't imagine why God would think Kelly would need this kind of trial.

    1. I'd say He allows them and can use them for good in the lives of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). So we can trust that God will use it for good in some way.

    2. Aren't you glad it's not our job to have to figure out the whys?

    3. Sometimes we get trials so that someone else can see how we handle that situation in our lives and it may help them in their lives.

      Delete
    4. Well, if we're not supposed to question why things happen it sure cuts down the pathway to learning new things. By asking questions we might learn what caused Kelly's health scare and find a way to prevent it from happening again.

    5. Kelly Jo is as “human” as the rest of us.

    6. 2:05…what a strange thing to say. Why does a 2 year old battle cancer? Why did multiple Christians lose their homes and lives in the North Carolina hurricane? What about Job? Kelly Jo isn’t any less subject to trials as anyone else.

  22. Everyone should be thanking the healthcare workers! You don’t have to mention god every single day.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Sure you do! "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above" - that's what God's Word says. Also "in every thing give thanks."

      Delete
    2. God works through the healthcare workers. They get the thanks due them of course, but God also should be thanked for every blessing. They prayed for their mother and she got better. God be thanked.

      Delete
    3. I don't know any healthcare workers who claim they're doing God's work, 10:07.

      Delete
    4. 10:07 Lots of people pray to get better, but they don't. My dad prayed to be cured from cancer, but he died anyway. I think that by saying "God works through health care workers", it takes away from the work they do. It means we don't have heroes, because with the good outcomes, God gets the credit. Bad outcome, it's "God works in mysterious
      ways."

  23. what's with the "septic" word? isn't it "sepsis"? Septic has to do with like sewers, septic tanks. I didn't know it was another word for sepsis. Is it? Or are people misspeaking?
